What Are Giclèe Prints
|
The world of fine art prints has changed dramatically in recent
years with the advent of new technologies. The use of high
quality printers that can produce unparalleled color and
richness is very exciting for both the artist and collector. The
following gives a brief background into the meaning of Giclée
printmaking.
Gicleur (pronounced gee-clur) is a French term used to describe
a unique continuous-tone printing technology for the creation of
fine art prints. Gicleur literally means "nozzle". This refers
to the millions of micron droplets that are sprayed by 4
precision nozzles onto hand-mounted archival museum quality
watercolor paper. (Each droplet is 4 times smaller than a human
hair.)
Giclée (pronounced gee-clay) means to squirt or to spray. A
Giclée print is a print that has been sprayed with color as
opposed to the traditional litho plate process that usually
demonstrates a dot pattern. Even under magnification, a Giclée
print appears to have a continuous tone. |
